    Attack on Gwadar Port Authority: BLA Militants Neutralised

    Multiple blasts and gunfire have been reported from the China-operated Gwadar Port Authority Complex, located in the province of Balochistan, according to Dawn. The Majeed Brigade of the proscribed Balochistan Liberation Army (BLA) has claimed responsibility for the attack. According to reports, eight BLA militants have been killed in the encounter.

     

    “Eight terrorists tried to attack the Gwadar Port Authority complex today. All of them have been neutralised by security forces,” Chief Minister of Balochistan Sarfraz Bugti said in a post on social media platform X.

     

    Makran Commissioner Saeed Ahmed Umrani told Dawn that multiple blasts and gunfire were reported in Gwadar Port Authority Complex. The report also mentioned that armed attackers ‘forcibly’ entered the Gwadar Port Authority Complex and opened fire.

     

    The China-operated Gwadar Port in Pakistan is situated on the shores of the Arabian Sea. According to Pakistani news channel ARY News, 8 BLA terrorists have been killed as they attempted to unleash a fatal attack on Gwadar Port Authority Complex.

     

    Following the attack and reported firing on the China-operated port, a large contingent of police and security forces reached the scene while the intense firing was ongoing.

     

    China has raised concerns about security in Pakistan after Chinese citizens have been killed in previous attacks. Pakistan is a flagship destination for President Xi Jinping’s signature Belt and Road Initiative. Pakistan witnessed an uptick in terror activities in the past year, especially in Balochistan after the banned militant group Tehreek-i-Taliban Pakistan ended its ceasefire with the government in November 2022, Dawn reported.

     

    In November, 14 Pakistan Army soldiers were killed after militants attacked two vehicles of security forces in Gwadar. The military vehicles came under attack while moving from Pasni to Ormara in the coastal district. According to a security report issued by the Centre for Research and Security Studies last month, Pakistan experienced 97 militant attacks in February, resulting in 87 fatalities and 118 injuries.

     

    The report highlighted a significant escalation in violence in Balochistan, juxtaposed with a decline in tribal districts and mainland Khyber Pakhtunkhwa. Security forces foiled an attack on the Gwadar Port Authority complex and killed eight attackers, The Express Tribune reported, citing sources.

Bush Joseph George, 31, and Paul Melvin, 28, both from the Idukki district, sustained injuries and were promptly transported to hospitals for medical treatment.

     

    While Paul Melvin’s injuries were reported to be minor, Bush Joseph George suffered more severe injuries to his face and body. He was admitted to Beilinson Hospital in Petah Tikva, where he underwent surgery and is currently in stable condition. He has been placed under observation and was able to communicate with his family in India, offering reassurance about his recovery progress.

    Pat Nibin Maxwell, a 31-year-old native of Kollam in Kerala, tragically lost his life when a missile launched by Hezbollah militants from Lebanon struck near the northern Israeli border community of Margaliot. The attack also left two other Indians, Paul Melvin and Bush Joseph George, both from Idukki in Kerala, injured.

     

    The missile struck a plantation in Margaliot, a collective agricultural community, located in the Galilee region of northern Israel around 11 a.m. on Monday, as confirmed by Zaki Heller, a spokesperson for the rescue services Magen David Adom (MDA).

     

    Maxwell, originally from Kollam, had recently arrived in Israel just two months prior on a work contract and was employed at a plantation in the vicinity. Tragically, he was in close proximity to the orchard when the missile struck the Israeli border.

     

    According to Maxwell’s father, his son had previously traveled to Muscat and Dubai before heading to Israel. “Thereafter, he went to Israel. First my elder son went there, and a week later my younger son too went there,” he revealed.

     

    Maxwell leaves behind his wife and a five-year-old daughter, with his wife also being seven months pregnant, as confirmed by his father. The family has been devastated by the news of Maxwell’s death and is now awaiting the arrival of his mortal remains. Maxwell has two other siblings, with his elder brother also working in Israel, while the third sibling resides in Abu Dhabi.

     

    The Indian Embassy has been contacted by Maxwell’s family, and arrangements are being made to repatriate his body to Kerala, a process expected to take around four days, as reported by the Hindustan Times.

    NIA Raids in Tamil Nadu Lead to Arrests in ISIS-Inspired Cases

    The National Investigation Agency (NIA) conducted a series of raids across Tamil Nadu, resulting in the arrest of four individuals suspected of involvement in the 2022 ISIS-inspired Coimbatore car bomb blast and ISIS radicalization and recruitment activities. The agency seized a significant amount of electronic devices, including laptops, mobile phones, SIM cards, SD cards, and hard discs, during the operation conducted on Saturday.

     

    The raids targeted 21 locations, including 11 associated with Madras Arabic College and Kovai Arabic College. These colleges were allegedly involved in the clandestine radicalization of young individuals under the guise of Arabic language classes. According to the NIA, radicalization occurred both offline, through physical classes, and online, via social media platforms like WhatsApp and Telegram. The suspects allegedly used these platforms to propagate radical ideologies, including Khilafat and ISIS ideologies, contrary to India’s secular and democratic principles.

     

    The NIA revealed that susceptible youth were recruited for terrorist activities, including the Coimbatore car bomb blast in October 2022. Investigations indicated that ten individuals arrested in connection with the blast had links to Kovai Arabic College. In addition to targeting locations associated with the colleges, the NIA teams also raided ten other places connected to the car bomb blast case.

     

    The suspects were found to have glorified Zahran Hashim, a deceased Sri Lankan terrorist responsible for orchestrating a suicide bombing in Colombo, Sri Lanka, in 2019, which claimed the lives of over 250 civilians. Discussions related to ISIS activities and establishing the organization’s presence in India were reportedly conducted on encrypted mobile platforms. Three of the arrested individuals were associated with Madras Arabic College, including Jameel Basha Umari, who allegedly promoted fundamentalism, extremism, and radicalization through the college.

     

    Maulvi Hussain Faizy and Irshath, former students of Jameel and Madras Arabic College, were involved in rebranding the institution as Kovai Arabic College. The fourth arrested individual, Syed Abdur Rahman Umari, was found in possession of incriminating ISIS-related literature. He was allegedly involved in propagating ISIS tenets to individuals connected with the Coimbatore car bomb blast case through secret gatherings and discussions.

     

    The NIA emphasized that investigations into both the ISIS radicalization and recruitment case and the Coimbatore car bomb blast case are ongoing. The agency’s efforts underscore the significant challenges posed by radicalization and terrorism in the country. The coordinated raids and arrests aim to disrupt and dismantle terror networks operating within India’s borders, safeguarding the nation’s security and preserving its democratic values.

    At least four policemen lost their lives and six others sustained injuries in a tragic terror attack in the Kulachi area of Dera Ismail Khan district in Pakistan’s Khyber Pakhtunkhwa region.     The attack, which involved unidentified gunmen setting off a bomb and subsequently opening fire at the security vehicle, took place in the jurisdiction of the Kalachi police station. The targeted vehicle was deployed specifically for the security of the Graha Aslam polling station. The injured individuals were promptly transported to nearby hospitals for urgent medical treatment, while the bodies of the deceased were also evacuated from the scene.
