Railway enthusiasts and commuters in India have reason to celebrate as significant progress is being made on the Mumbai-Ahmedabad high-speed rail corridor. Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw recently took to the social media platform X to declare the successful completion of a crucial mountain tunnel, marking a significant milestone in this ambitious infrastructure project.

The newly completed tunnel, a 350-meter-long horseshoe-shaped marvel, is nestled in the mountains near Zaroli village. According to officials, trains on this high-speed rail corridor are expected to reach speeds of up to 350 kilometers per hour, dramatically reducing travel time between Mumbai and Ahmedabad.

The National High-Speed Rail Corporation Limited (NHSRCL) is spearheading this revolutionary project, which aims to connect these two major cities with cutting-edge Shinkansen trainsets imported from Japan. To achieve this goal, the NHSRCL plans to construct six additional tunnels along the 508-kilometer route, further enhancing connectivity and travel efficiency.

S P Mittal, Chief Project Manager of the Valsad section, expressed immense pride in this accomplishment. He highlighted the significance of this tunnel, stating, “What makes us celebrate it is that it is the first tunnel in India through which a train with a speed of 350 kmph will pass.” He also emphasized the precision required in construction, stating, “The biggest challenge for us was how to keep the alignment of the tunnel absolutely straight… minor alignment flaw can play spoilsport. So every specification has to be followed precisely, and you will not find a deviation of even a single millimeter.”

The contract for this project was awarded to Larsen and Toubro, a renowned Indian construction company. The New Austrian Tunnelling Method (NATM), a well-established technique for rail and road projects in mountainous regions of India, was employed for the construction of this tunnel. The NATM approach emphasizes safety and precision throughout the tunneling process, ensuring the well-being of workers and nearby residents.

Mittal revealed that the tunnelling work spanned over a year and involved a substantial workforce dedicated to ensuring the project’s success. He proudly noted that his team did not encounter a single untoward incident during the entire construction period, underscoring the commitment to safety and quality.

The Mumbai-Ahmedabad high-speed rail corridor project was initiated in 2016, with the foundation stone laid in 2017. Initially slated for completion by December 2023, the project faced delays primarily due to land acquisition challenges. While construction efforts are ongoing, the new operationalization deadline for the project is yet to be announced.

The potential benefits of the high-speed rail corridor are promising. According to the NHSRCL spokesperson, commuters using this bullet train will be able to complete the 508-kilometer journey between Mumbai and Ahmedabad in just two hours and seven minutes, a significant reduction from the current five-hour train journey.

The recently completed tunnel is situated approximately one kilometer from Zaroli village in Umbergaon taluka, Valsad. It boasts impressive dimensions, measuring 350 meters in length, 10.25 meters in height, and having a diameter of 12.6 meters.

Contracts have also been awarded for the construction of six other mountain tunnels in Maharashtra’s Palghar district, employing the NATM technique to further enhance the connectivity and efficiency of this transformative rail corridor.
