India, in collaboration with the World Health Organization (WHO), is set to launch the Global Initiative on Digital Health during the ongoing G20 summit in Gandhinagar, Gujarat. The initiative is part of the G20 Health Ministers’ meeting being held under the G20 India Presidency from August 17 to 19. This significant framework aims to foster collaboration among nations and organizations to leverage digital solutions and cutting-edge technologies for transforming healthcare globally.

Highlighting the importance of the initiative, Dr. Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, Director-General of the WHO, praised India for its advancements in health coverage and schemes. He noted that digital technology has the potential to transform health on a local and global scale, and the Global Initiative on Digital Health aligns with the WHO Strategy on Digital Health. This initiative is designed to support the WHO’s global strategy on digital health and amplify existing efforts, including the global digital health certification network.

India’s Prime Minister Narendra Modi emphasized the role of digital solutions and innovations in making healthcare efforts equitable and inclusive. He cited India’s national platforms, such as e-Sanjeevani, which has facilitated 140 million telehealth consultations, and the COWIN platform, which managed the delivery of over 2.4 billion vaccine doses and vaccination certificates. PM Modi also expressed that the Global Initiative on Digital Health will bring various digital health initiatives onto a common platform, fostering collaboration, avoiding duplication of funding, and facilitating equitable technology availability.

The launch of the Global Initiative on Digital Health aligns with India’s presidency of the G20, where the country aims to promote global collaboration and innovative solutions for healthcare delivery. The initiative seeks to bridge the gap in healthcare delivery and move from silos to integrated healthcare systems.

A Joint Finance–Health Ministers’ Meeting will also take place during the G20 Health Ministers’ Meeting as a focus event. India assumed the presidency of the G20 in December 2022 and is currently part of the G20 Troika alongside Indonesia and Brazil.

As the global healthcare landscape evolves, the Global Initiative on Digital Health stands as a significant step toward leveraging technology for accessible and high-quality healthcare services. With the support of countries, organizations, and innovative solutions, the initiative is poised to contribute to the advancement of healthcare systems on a global scale.
