Despite the roadblocks in receiving visa for travelling abroad for certain countries, the company continues to see a surge in demand to travel to international destinations.

Indians planning their summer travel to Europe may experience shorter waiting times at visa centers this year, as visa services provider VFS Global anticipates an improvement in visa processing times. This positive outlook is attributed to the deployment of additional staff by client governments to handle the influx of visa applications.

Vishal Jairath, head of South Asia at VFS Global, shared insights into the expected enhancements in visa processing. He mentioned that Switzerland has allocated 25% more appointments, with appointments spread out evenly throughout the year, unlike the previous concentration within a few months. Similarly, Austria aims to increase appointments and expedite turnaround times. The UK offers priority services, while Canada and the US are also streamlining their appointment processes, with the US witnessing a significant reduction in appointment wait times from two years to 8-9 months.

The disruptions caused by a two-year ban on international air travel led to staffing shortages when restrictions were lifted in March 2022, resulting in a backlog of visa applications. However, in 2024, many client governments have hired additional local or expatriate staff, improving their capacity to process visa applications efficiently.

Despite challenges in obtaining visas for certain countries, VFS Global continues to witness a surge in demand for international travel. In 2023, the company experienced a 16% year-on-year growth in visa applications in India, reaching 93% of pre-pandemic levels seen in 2019. It anticipates surpassing pre-COVID visa application volumes this year, with early indications pointing towards higher summer travel demand compared to last year.

According to data from VFS Global, the US, the UK, and Canada remain the top destinations of interest for Indian travelers, followed by China, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, the Netherlands, Saudi Arabia, and Switzerland.

In addition to increased travel demand, there is a growing trend of travelers opting for personalized services, driven by higher disposable incomes and a focus on safety and comfort, particularly since the COVID-19 pandemic. This trend has led to a five-fold increase in VFS Global’s “visa at your doorstep” service and a 4% growth since 2022. The company has also expanded its premium lounges from 14 to 34 to meet the rising demand for enhanced customer experiences.

In response to the growing demand and improving economic conditions in tier-2 and tier-3 cities, VFS Global is considering expanding its footprint. After a decade-long hiatus, the company recently opened a new center in Lucknow, and plans are underway to expand operations in Jaipur, reflecting its commitment to serving travelers across diverse regions.

Overall, the anticipated improvements in visa processing times, coupled with the growing demand for international travel and personalized services, suggest a positive outlook for Indian travelers planning trips abroad, particularly to Europe. As VFS Global continues to adapt and expand its services, travelers can expect smoother visa processing experiences and enhanced travel options in the coming months.
