    In a distressing incident, the Kota district administration in Rajasthan has seized a hostel facility after a NEET (National Eligibility cum Entrance Test) aspirant took his own life due to the absence of ‘anti-suicide devices’ in ceiling fans. The 19-year-old student from Uttar Pradesh’s Moradabad tragically committed suicide by hanging himself in his hostel room at Kanchan Residency in Rajiv Gandhi Nagar on January 23.

     

    The district administration took swift action against the hostel after it was discovered that the facility violated safety guidelines set in place for the protection of students, as revealed by Kota district collector Dr Ravindra Goswami. These guidelines specifically mandated hostels to install spring devices on ceiling fans to prevent suicide attempts.

     

    Initiation of Seizure Process

    Following the unfortunate incident, an inquiry was initiated by the additional district magistrate court. The investigation stemmed from the suicide of a student in the hostel last month. Based on the inquiry report, the ADM (Additional District Magistrate) court directed the initiation of action under CrPC (Code of Criminal Procedure) Section 133 and ordered the seizure of Kanchan Residency hostel in Rajiv Gandhi Nagar, Talwandi Kota, according to Goswami.

     

    The tragic event has prompted authorities to take strict measures against hostels that do not adhere to safety protocols, ensuring the well-being of students preparing for competitive exams in coaching hubs like Kota.

     

    Details of the Incident

    The Circle Officer of Jawahar Nagar area, DSP Bhawani Singh, disclosed that the hostel warden notified the police when the student did not emerge from his room until Tuesday evening. The police were alerted around 10 pm, and upon investigation, it was discovered that the student had taken his own life by hanging. No suicide note was found in the room, and the reasons behind the extreme step are yet to be ascertained pending a thorough investigation.

    The recent tragic incident involved a minor girl from Uttar Pradesh who had moved to Kota for her exam preparations. This marks the 26th student suicide this year alone, reflecting the alarming rate at which young lives are being lost due to academic stress and other related factors.

     

    In response to this crisis, three hostel associations in Kota have taken a proactive step by signing a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Jai Minesh Tribal University. The objective of this collaboration is to provide professional training to hostel wardens and staff members. The training will cover areas such as mess management, psychological counseling, and behavioral guidance.

     

    Kota Hostel Association President Naveen Mittal emphasized that Kota is home to around 3,500 hostels, accommodating over 2.5 lakh students annually. The sheer number of students coming to Kota for coaching makes it imperative to address their mental and emotional well-being.

     

    The Jai Minesh Tribal University is set to design special Hostel Management certificate courses tailored to the unique needs of wardens and staff working in these hostels. These courses aim to equip them with the skills and knowledge required to identify signs of stress, depression, or emotional turmoil among students and provide timely support.

     

    Apart from providing training, the administration in Kota has taken other measures to mitigate the crisis. One significant step has been the mandatory installation of anti-hanging devices in fans, reducing the risk of self-harm by students. This measure was encouraged by the Kota Hostel Association for years and was eventually mandated by the district administration in 2023.

     

    Additionally, “anti-suicide nets” are being installed in balconies and lobbies of hostels to act as a physical barrier against extreme steps. The local police are also actively engaging with hostel wardens, mess workers, and tiffin service providers, urging them to participate in the “darwaze pe dastak” (knock on the door) campaign. This campaign encourages vigilant monitoring for signs of distress or unusual behavior among students.

     

    The surge in student suicides in Kota is a pressing concern, prompting both the government and local organizations to prioritize the mental health and well-being of students. The professional training initiatives and safety measures are aimed at creating a supportive environment for young aspirants striving for academic success in a highly competitive landscape.

    Rajasthan Cabinet Minister Shanti Dhariwal has made controversial statements attributing the rising cases of student suicides in Kota to “affairs” and “parental pressure.” This comes in the wake of increasing concerns about student suicides in Kota, a prominent coaching hub for competitive exams in India.

     

    Dhariwal’s remarks were made in reference to the recent death of a 16-year-old girl from Jharkhand who was preparing for the National Eligibility cum Entrance Test (NEET) in Kota. The girl was found hanging in her room, and while no suicide note was recovered, the police initiated an investigation into the circumstances surrounding her suicide.

     

    The minister stated, “There is a need to investigate each and every case. In the case of the girl from Jharkhand who died today, it was found out that she had an affair due to which she died. She has left a letter.”

     

    He went on to suggest that student suicides are also influenced by peer pressure, saying, “There have been cases where students have committed suicide due to affairs. A boy comes from Bihar and finds out he does not have as much calibre to perform as other students who stay with him do. He could also die by suicide due to peer pressure.”

     

    Additionally, Dhariwal pointed out “parental pressure” as another factor contributing to student suicides. He stated, “There is parental pressure to perform as well.”

     

    The minister’s comments have sparked controversy and raised questions about the mental health and well-being of students studying in coaching centers in Kota. The city has gained notoriety for the high-pressure environment created by the intense competition and expectations placed on students preparing for competitive exams.

     

    According to Rajasthan Police data, there has been a concerning increase in student suicides in Kota. In 2023 alone, 25 student deaths by suicide have been reported, a significant rise compared to previous years. While student suicides in Kota have been a longstanding concern, the recent surge has prompted calls for a closer examination of the factors contributing to this trend and the need for mental health support for students.
