ICC Announces Equal Pay for Female Match Officials in Cricket

In a groundbreaking move towards gender equality in cricket, the International Cricket Council (ICC) announced equal pay for female match officials. The initiative, set to be implemented from January 2024, represents a significant stride towards providing equal opportunities in the sport.

“The reforms include the equalization of match-day pay for ICC umpires, regardless of whether they are officiating men’s or women’s cricket matches,” the ICC stated in a press release on 21 November.

This development underscores the ICC’s commitment to fostering inclusivity and ensuring that gender does not impact remuneration for match officials. The move aligns with global efforts to bridge gender gaps in various fields, including sports.

In addition to equal pay, the Chief Executives’ Committee (CEC) recommended the inclusion of at least one neutral umpire in every ICC Women’s Championship series. This aligns with the long-standing practice in men’s international cricket, enhancing the overall fairness and impartiality in officiating.

The ICC’s commitment to inclusivity also extends to gender eligibility regulations for women’s cricket. According to the newly approved regulations, individuals who have undergone male puberty will not be eligible to compete in international women’s games, irrespective of any surgical or gender reassignment treatment undertaken. These regulations aim to protect the integrity of the international women’s game and ensure the safety of players.

Geoff Allardice, ICC Chief Executive, emphasized the importance of inclusivity in the sport. “Inclusivity is incredibly important to us as a sport, but our priority was to protect the integrity of the international women’s game and the safety of players,” he stated. The changes in gender eligibility regulations resulted from extensive consultation and are grounded in scientific principles. The ICC plans to revisit these regulations within two years to align with the evolving landscape of the sport.

In an effort to reinvent the game and enhance the spectator experience, the ICC also introduced a trial ‘stop clock’ in men’s ODI and T20I cricket. This trial, set to run from December 2023 to April 2024, will impose a five-run penalty the third time a bowling team fails to be ready to bowl the next over within 60 seconds of completing the previous one. The ‘stop clock’ initiative aims to improve the pace of the game, making it more engaging for fans.

Alongside these measures, the ICC approved changes related to pitch and outfield monitoring regulations. The criteria for pitch assessment have been simplified, and the threshold for when a venue might lose its international status has been increased from five to six demerit points over five years. These changes provide a more straightforward framework for evaluating the condition of pitches and outfield areas, ensuring that international venues maintain the required standards.

The ICC’s recent announcements mark a significant moment in the journey towards gender equality in cricket. The introduction of equal pay for female match officials, gender eligibility regulations, and other reforms demonstrates the governing body’s commitment to creating a more inclusive and equitable environment within the sport. The trial ‘stop clock’ and changes in pitch monitoring regulations further contribute to the ongoing efforts to enhance the overall cricketing experience for players and fans alike. As cricket continues to evolve, these initiatives play a crucial role in shaping a more inclusive and progressive future for the sport on the global stage.

DP World Partners with Sachin Tendulkar and ICC

Dubai-based multinational logistics company DP World has joined hands with cricket icon Sachin Tendulkar and the International Cricket Council (ICC) to introduce a remarkable initiative named ‘Beyond Boundaries.’ This ambitious five-year program aims to provide cricket kits and equipment to grassroots cricket clubs worldwide, further promoting the sport among emerging talents.

The launch of this groundbreaking initiative took place in Mumbai, where Sachin Tendulkar unveiled the first repurposed shipping container that will serve as a cricket hub. The timing was significant, as it preceded the ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup, set to kick off in Ahmedabad on October 5. The initial DP World container, along with 40 cricket kits, found its home at the Chikhalikar Sports Club in Palghar, Maharashtra. Additionally, 210 kits will be distributed to young cricketers associated with academies such as the Achrekar Cricket Academy and Shivaji Park Gymkhana Academy.

Each of the 50 shipping containers repurposed for this initiative will contain 250 customized cricket kits. These kits include essential cricket gear such as bats, helmets, gloves, and pads. What sets these containers apart is their dual functionality. In addition to housing cricket equipment, they will serve as versatile pavilions, complete with built-in scoreboards, sun protection, and seating arrangements, providing a holistic cricket experience.

Sachin Tendulkar, a cricket legend renowned worldwide, expressed his excitement about this initiative, stating, “Cricket is becoming more global, and this initiative supports the growth of the game. We’re focusing on creating cricket spaces and distributing kits in countries where cricket is not as popular. Grassroots initiatives are vital to cricket development. Talent needs nurturing, and organizations like DP World must provide the support needed for athletes to thrive.”

The ‘Beyond Boundaries’ initiative is not limited to promoting the sport among boys alone. It also offers a safe space for young girls, who can utilize these containers as changing rooms, fostering inclusivity in the sport.

While three containers will be distributed in India, DP World has yet to unveil the list of countries where the remaining 47 containers will be sent. Kevin D’Souza, Senior Vice President of Business Development for the Middle East, North Africa, and the India subcontinent at DP World, emphasized the global reach of this initiative, saying, “This allows us to take cricket to the grassroots right across the world and to engage with diverse communities that benefit from our logistics services. So we’re bringing sports and trade together in some way.”

DP World boasts an extensive network in India, comprising six port terminals, seven rail terminals, six container freight stations, two under-construction free-trade and warehousing zones, 92 cities with express logistics centers, and 30 container trains. The company has made significant investments in India, exceeding $1.2 billion. In 2018, it partnered with the National Investment and Infrastructure Fund (NIIF), India’s first sovereign wealth fund, to establish a platform for investments of up to $3 billion in various logistics and infrastructure projects.

To add a touch of local flavor to the initiative, the first container’s design was crafted by the talented local artist Sadhna Prasad. The artwork pays homage to Sachin Tendulkar, affectionately known as the “Master Blaster,” with the first ten containers being inspired by Tendulkar’s legendary cricketing journey.

The ‘Beyond Boundaries’ initiative will garner additional attention throughout the ICC tournament through special broadcasts. A bespoke graphic will display that for every 100 runs scored during the tournament, 10 cricket kits will be donated. All kit donations will be facilitated through the repurposed shipping containers, solidifying the initiative’s commitment to promoting cricket at the grassroots level.

‘Beyond Boundaries’ is a commendable initiative that marries the logistics expertise of DP World with the cricketing legacy of Sachin Tendulkar and the global reach of the ICC. By providing essential cricket equipment and multifunctional spaces, this program not only nurtures young cricketing talent but also underscores the power of sports philanthropy in bringing communities together and promoting inclusivity in the world of cricket. As these repurposed containers crisscross the globe, they will leave an indelible mark on the future of the sport, inspiring a new generation of cricketers to dream beyond boundaries.

Harmanpreet Kaur: Suspension and Heavy Fine

Harmanpreet Kaur’s actions during the third final ODI against Bangladesh have stirred up significant criticism not only from veteran Indian players but also from the Board of Control of Cricket (BCCI). The International Cricket Council (ICC) has taken note of the multiple offenses committed by the Indian skipper, leading to her suspension and heavy fine from the next two international matches, which include the crucial quarterfinals and semi-finals of the upcoming Asian Games.

Despite the setback, Harmanpreet Kaur remains hopeful that her absence will motivate her team to perform exceptionally well and secure a spot in the Asian Games final. She is eager to contribute her skills and leadership in the ultimate match and lead her team to victory.

This edition of the Asian Games marks cricket’s third appearance in the event. It is also a historic moment as both the men’s and women’s teams have been sent by the BCCI for the first time. Based on their ICC rankings, both teams have qualified directly for the quarterfinal stage, skipping the preliminary rounds.

The men’s tournament boasts the participation of 18 teams and is scheduled to commence on September 28, with the final match set for October 7. Notably, the men’s ODI World Cup will commence just two days earlier, on October 5, at Ahmedabad’s prestigious Narendra Modi Stadium. If the young and talented Ruturaj Gaikwad-led team advances to the final, they could potentially face a challenging schedule, playing on three consecutive days – October 5 for the quarter-final, October 6 for the semi-final, and October 7 for the final.

On the other hand, the women’s tournament will feature 14 teams and will be held before the men’s event. The tournament will kick off on September 19, with the final match slated for September 26.

Harmanpreet Kaur’s actions during the controversial match resulted in a heavy fine, amounting to 50% of her match fee for a Level 2 offense. In addition, she received three demerit points for expressing her frustration by smashing the stumps after her dismissal. She was further charged with “showing dissent at an umpire’s decision,” leading to an extra fine of 25% of her match fees and an additional demerit point.

Shikhar Dhawan, a seasoned Indian cricketer with 13 years of international experience, graced the launch of the ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup 2023 official film, ‘It Takes One Day,’ organized by Meta in Mumbai. This captivating film featured some of the cricketing world’s finest talents, and Bollywood superstar Shahrukh Khan’s compelling narration added a touch of glamour to the specially conceptualized CWC23 ‘Navarasa,’ effectively capturing the raw emotions experienced by both fans and players.

During the event, Dhawan expressed his awe for the present young generation of cricketers and their remarkable ability to bring innovation and creativity to the game. He lauded how contemporary players have introduced new strategies and shots, inspiring even experienced cricketers like himself to learn and adapt continuously.

The cricketer shared an interesting anecdote from the T20 World Cup 2022, where he sought guidance from fellow teammate Suryakumar Yadav about a particular shot. This eagerness to learn and incorporate fresh techniques is a testament to the evolving approach to the game, characterized by a quest for constant improvement.

Dhawan emphasized the significant shift in the mindset of today’s youth who fearlessly express themselves on the field. He contrasted this with the coaching philosophy in his early days, where the focus was primarily on playing grounded shots. In contrast, the current generation embraces a more expressive and fearless style of play, unburdened by the fear of judgment.

With a remarkable performance in various 50-over global ICC tournaments, including the Champions Trophy and the Cricket World Cup, Dhawan expressed his excitement for playing on such a grand stage. Representing India in a World Cup holds a special place in his heart, as it symbolizes a sense of achievement and pride for any cricketer.
