Desecration of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Statue in Goa

In a disheartening incident, a statue paying homage to the esteemed Marathi ruler, Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj, was subjected to desecration in the serene village of Karaswada, nestled near the bustling Mapusa town in North Goa. The sacrilege of this revered icon has stirred a maelstrom of outrage among the populace, culminating in the apprehension of three individuals who played a role in this condemnable act of vandalism.

Responding promptly to the incident, Deputy Superintendent of Police, Jivba Dalvi, spearheaded a dedicated team to the affected village. With a commitment to justice, the team extended assurance to the community of a meticulous investigation into the appalling act. This tenacious pursuit yielded results, leading to the apprehension of three suspects, namely Nigesl Joaquim Fonceca, Alex Fernandes, and Lawrence Mendes, all residents of Mapusa, on a Tuesday marked by decisive action.

This audacious act of desecration echoed through the public conscience, fomenting a collective outcry that manifested in hundreds of individuals congregating outside the precincts of the Mapusa police station. The impassioned demand for swift accountability resonated, underscoring the significance of preserving revered symbols and values. In a gesture of resilience and determination, the marred statue was swiftly replaced by an untarnished rendition, a ceremony graced by the presence of state social welfare minister Subhash Phal Desai on the evening of a somber Monday.

The legal wheels of justice commenced their motion as the three detainees faced a court’s judgement. Six days of police custody were ordered for Nigesl Joaquim Fonceca, Alex Fernandes, and Lawrence Mendes. These individuals now face charges under sections 295-A (outraging religious feelings), 153-A (promoting enmity between groups), and 427-A (committing mischief and causing loss) of the Indian Penal Code, an embodiment of society’s intolerance for such acts.

Carlos Ferreira, a prominent MLA representing Aldona in North Goa, emerged as a vocal critic of the reprehensible act of desecration. A steadfast advocate of unity and cultural heritage, he extended his unwavering support to the followers of the 17th-century Maratha king, Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj. In a proclamation of resilience, Ferreira revealed the ongoing preparations to install a new statue at the very location, an embodiment of resilience and a testament to the enduring reverence for Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj that resides within the hearts of the people. In a disheartening incident, a statue paying homage to the esteemed Marathi ruler, Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj, was subjected to desecration in the serene village of Karaswada, nestled near the bustling Mapusa town in North Goa. The event witnessed the presence of distinguished political figures, including Ajit Pawar, Eknath Shinde, Devendra Fadnavis, and NCP chief Sharad Pawar, who shared the stage with PM Modi. During the ceremony, an emotional moment was captured between PM Modi and Sharad Pawar.

In his address, PM Modi expressed his gratitude, calling it a memorable moment. He acknowledged the profound impact of Lokmanya Tilak award contributions to India’s freedom struggle and paid homage to all freedom fighters. The Prime Minister also praised the rich history of Maharashtra, highlighting the significance of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj and Jyotirba Phule in shaping the nation.

PM Modi announced that he would donate the prize money from the award to the Namami Gange project, showcasing his dedication to environmental conservation and the welfare of the country’s people. He dedicated the award to the 140 crore citizens of India.

However, Pawar’s presence at the ceremony sparked controversy within the Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA) government. The Shiv Sena (UBT) criticized Pawar’s decision to attend, suggesting that he could have used the opportunity to protest against the political engineering that led to a split in the NCP. The editorial in ‘Saamana’ highlighted the expectations from a senior leader like Sharad Pawar and suggested that staying away from the event could have garnered appreciation for his leadership and courage.

The editorial further emphasized the ongoing fight against “dictatorship” and the formation of the INDIA alliance comprising 26 opposition parties, with Pawar being considered the “leading general” of the alliance.

PM Narendra Modi Inaugurates Pune Metro Corridors

On Tuesday, Prime Minister Narendra Modi marked a significant milestone in Pune’s urban transport development by leading the inauguration of new corridors of the Pune Metro. This event is a vital step in realizing the vision of providing modern and environment-friendly mass rapid urban transport systems across the country.

As part of the inauguration, the prime minister flagged off metro trains, officially opening the completed sections of two corridors of Pune Metro Phase I. These sections connect critical areas of Pune city, such as Shivaji Nagar, Civil Court, Pune Municipal Corporation office, Pune RTO, and Pune Railway Station. The construction of these sections commenced with the laying of the foundation stone by the prime minister in 2016.

The design of several metro stations on the route draws inspiration from the great Maratha warrior, Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj. For instance, the Chhatrapati Sambhaji Udyan Metro Station and Deccan Gymkhana Metro Station feature a unique design resembling the headgear worn by soldiers of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj, known as ‘Mavala Pagadi.’ The Shivaji Nagar underground Metro Station is designed in a way reminiscent of the majestic forts built by Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj.

During the ceremony, Prime Minister Modi also handed over more than 1,280 houses constructed under the Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana (PMAY) by the Pimpri Chinchwad Municipal Corporation (PCMC). Additionally, he inaugurated the waste-to-energy plant under PCMC, a significant development project developed at a cost of about ₹300 crore. The plant will utilize approximately 2.5 lakh MT of waste annually to produce electricity, contributing to sustainable energy solutions.

Furthermore, the event witnessed the laying of the foundation stone for around 1190 PMAY houses to be constructed by PCMC and over 6400 houses constructed by the Pune Metropolitan Region Development Authority, aiming to address housing needs in the region.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s active involvement in the inauguration of these projects underscores the government’s commitment to fostering growth and sustainability in Pune. The development of modern infrastructure, including the metro system and waste-to-energy solutions, holds the promise of transforming the city’s urban landscape for the better.
