Fifth Arrest Made in Manipur Student Abduction Case

Months after the alleged abduction and murder of two Meitei students in Manipur, significant developments have emerged in the case. On October 13, the Crime Bureau of Investigation (CBI) announced the arrest of a 22-year-old man, marking the fifth arrest in the case, which unfolded on July 6.

The latest arrest, Paolun Mang, was apprehended in Pune, Maharashtra. Mang’s role is believed to be prominent in the abduction and murder of the two students. He was taken into custody based on the interrogation of the four individuals arrested earlier.

As per the investigation, the victims, a 20-year-old boy named Phijam Hemanjit Singh and a 17-year-old girl named Luwangbi Linthoingambi Hijam, were allegedly abducted by Kuki militants in Laimaton on July 6. While their bodies have not been recovered, photographs surfaced in September that indicated the students had been killed.

Until the images emerged on social media, the families of the missing students held onto hope that their children were alive somewhere in the ethnically divided state. However, the photos that went viral on September 25 showed the students sitting on the ground in what appeared to be a forest, with armed men in the background. Another photograph showed them lying lifeless, wearing the same clothes as in the first image. Their faces were not visible in the second photograph, and its authenticity could not be independently verified.

The release of these images triggered protests across Manipur, and on September 28, a large crowd attempted to storm the private residence of Chief Minister Biren Singh in Luwangsangbam. Law enforcement and security forces used tear gas to contain the protests.

To probe the alleged murder of the two students, a special CBI team led by senior officer Special Director Ajay Bhatnagar was dispatched to Imphal. The CBI continues its search for LHingneichong’s husband, Wohkhogin Baite, also known as Tiger, a militant believed to be the main accused in the case.

The arrest of Paolun Mang is a significant development in the investigation, as the CBI intensifies efforts to uncover the truth behind the abduction and murder of the Meitei students in Manipur. The case remains a focal point of public attention, and authorities are committed to delivering justice for the victims and their families.

Man Presumed Dead in Manipur’s Ethnic Violence Found Alive

In a remarkable turn of events, a man in Manipur, who had been presumed dead amid the ongoing ethnic violence in the state, made a surprising return home on Tuesday. Satkhothang Kipgen, a 49-year-old resident of Manipur’s Kangpokpi district, had gone missing on September 30, leading to widespread concerns about his fate.

The Kuki Students Organization’s media cell had previously honored Satkhothang Kipgen as a “fallen hero” who had supposedly sacrificed his life “in defense of our ancestral land and freedom” during the ethnic conflict.

However, against all expectations, Mr. Kipgen was discovered alive by Manipur Police near Longjang village in Kangpokpi district on Tuesday. His unexpected reappearance has left the community and authorities in disbelief.

Upon being found, Mr. Kipgen revealed that he had lost his way after consuming an excessive amount of alcohol. This unexpected twist in his disappearance sheds a different light on the circumstances surrounding his absence.

During his absence, allegations of abduction had emerged. The Committee of Tribal Unity (CoTU) had accused armed individuals of abducting Mr. Kipgen on September 30. His sudden return and the revelation of alcohol-induced disorientation have sparked questions about the accuracy of the initial reports surrounding his disappearance.

The ethnic violence in Manipur has been a cause for great concern, with significant loss of life and injuries reported. As of now, official sources indicate that 175 people have lost their lives in the conflict, and over 1,100 individuals have been injured. Additionally, 32 people had gone missing during the course of the violence.

Of the total number of fatalities, nine individuals remain unidentified, further underscoring the complexity and gravity of the situation. The ethnic conflict, which began on May 3, has had a profound impact on the region, resulting in significant human suffering and distress.

The unexpected reappearance of Satkhothang Kipgen, previously believed to have perished, highlights the unpredictable nature of events in conflict zones and the challenges faced by both authorities and communities during such times. The conflicting reports surrounding his disappearance and subsequent return underscore the importance of accurate information and thorough investigations in understanding the complex dynamics of the situation.

While Mr. Kipgen’s return brings relief to his family and community, it also raises questions about the circumstances and misinformation surrounding his initial disappearance. As authorities continue to address the broader issues related to ethnic violence in Manipur, they will likely consider this incident as part of the broader context and ongoing efforts to restore peace and stability to the region.
