Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s visit to his Lok Sabha constituency, Varanasi, became a platform for political banter as he took a jibe at Congress leader Rahul Gandhi’s recent “nasheri yuva” (intoxicated youth) remark. Addressing the gathering, PM Modi retorted, “Those who are not in ‘hosh’ (senses) themselves are calling the youth ‘nasheri’,” in an apparent reference to Gandhi’s comments about Varanasi’s youth.

Rahul Gandhi had stirred controversy when he commented on the state of some youths in Varanasi, claiming to have seen them inebriated, lying on the streets, and dancing at night. He went further to suggest that the future of Uttar Pradesh’s youth was in a state of intoxication.

PM Modi’s response not only dismissed Gandhi’s criticism but also brought attention to the political rivalry between the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and the Congress. He reiterated his stance against “parivarvaad” (dynastic politics), accusing the Congress of corruption and appeasement.

During his visit, PM Modi also paid tribute to Gadge Maharaj, a revered saint and social reformer, on his birth anniversary. Gadge Maharaj, also known as Sant Gadge Maharaj or Sant Gadge Baba, played a significant role in social upliftment and reform in Maharashtra. Born as Debuji Zhingraji Janorkar in Shendgaon village, Gadge Maharaj dedicated his life to the welfare of the Dalits and the deprived.

PM Modi highlighted Gadge Maharaj’s contributions to society, particularly in breaking stereotypes and advocating for the welfare of marginalized communities. He noted that Gadge Maharaj was greatly influenced by the ideals of BR Ambedkar, emphasizing the importance of their legacy in addressing social inequalities.

The visit to Varanasi allowed PM Modi to connect with the local community and showcase the developmental initiatives undertaken by his government. He emphasized the significance of animal husbandry in empowering women and supporting small and landless farmers. PM Modi also stressed his commitment to promoting local artisans and entrepreneurs, aligning with his “vocal for local” campaign.

Reflecting on the progress made in Varanasi over the past decade, PM Modi expressed pride in the city’s development and attributed it to the collective efforts of its residents. He underscored his dedication to improving the lives of the people of Varanasi, acknowledging the role they played in shaping his identity as a “Banarasi.”

Overall, PM Modi’s visit to Varanasi was not only a political event but also an opportunity to celebrate the rich cultural heritage and achievements of the region. By addressing pertinent issues and engaging with the local community, PM Modi reaffirmed his commitment to serving the people and driving development in Uttar Pradesh.
