In the midst of heightened tensions between India and the Maldives, the Maldivian government has accused Indian coast guard personnel of boarding three Maldivian fishing vessels without prior consultation. The incident has further strained diplomatic relations between the two nations.

The Maldives defense ministry revealed that they were notified on Wednesday about the presence of foreign military personnel on a Maldivian fishing vessel. Upon investigation, it was confirmed that the individuals were members of the Indian coast guard. The Maldivian government has since lodged an official complaint, seeking details of the operation and questioning the unauthorized presence in Maldivian waters.

Diplomatic Discord: Allegations and Silence

The Maldives defense ministry, in a statement, expressed concern over the boarding incident, stating, “On Feb. 1, 2024, the foreign ministry of the Maldives has asked (India) officially for the details of the operation that was carried out while Maldivians were fishing in the Maldivian exclusive economic zone, without any coordination with the relevant authorities and against all international laws.” As of now, there has been no official response from the Indian government regarding the allegations.

India-Maldives Dispute: Background and Recent Developments

The ongoing discord between India and the Maldives is exacerbated by the recent election of President Mohamed Muizzu, a leader known for his pro-China stance. Muizzu, previously associated with the “India Out” campaign, has called for the removal of Indian military personnel stationed in certain islands. The disagreement intensified when contradictory statements emerged regarding the withdrawal of Indian troops.

While the Maldives foreign ministry asserted that an agreement was reached in New Delhi for India to commence troop withdrawal on March 10, completing the process by May 10, the Indian foreign ministry’s statement did not confirm a withdrawal but mentioned an agreement on a set of solutions.

Strategic Influence and Social Media Sensitivity

The strategic location of the Maldives, along crucial sea routes, makes it a focal point for both India and China, both competing for influence in the region. The dispute took an unusual turn last month when Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi posted pictures on social media showcasing himself strolling and snorkeling in Lakshadweep, an Indian archipelago that bears a striking resemblance to the Maldives. This move further fueled tensions and raised eyebrows about the sensitivity of the region.

As the diplomatic row continues, the international community watches closely to see how India and the Maldives navigate and resolve these complex issues that involve military presence, maritime rights, and geopolitical influence.
