In a significant development, the Indian Ambassador to Qatar, along with embassy officials, met with eight veteran Navy officials who were jailed in Qatar. This meeting follows a Qatari court’s decision to commute the death sentences of these former Navy personnel in the Dahra Global Case. The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) provided an update during its recent briefing, highlighting the ongoing legal process and efforts to explore the appeal mechanism within the prescribed 60-day period.

As per MEA official spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal, “Our ambassador, along with our embassy officials, met the eight detained. As we had conveyed to you last time, the legal team is looking into the appeal aspect. There are 60 days within which they have to file this appeal.” This meeting aimed to assess the well-being of the individuals and gather information relevant to the ongoing legal proceedings.

The eight Indian nationals, all former members of the Indian Navy, were arrested on allegations of spying on a submarine program while working with the private company Al Dahra. Initially sentenced to death by a Qatari court on charges that have not been officially disclosed, the individuals later saw their sentences reduced to jail terms. The case has attracted attention due to its implications on the individuals’ lives and the diplomatic efforts involved.

The Ministry of External Affairs issued a statement regarding the court’s decision, saying, “We have noted the verdict today of the Court of Appeal of Qatar in the Dahra Global case, in which the sentences have been reduced.” The ministry also mentioned that the detailed judgment in the case is awaited and that they are in close contact with the legal team in Qatar.

Regarding the ongoing legal proceedings, the MEA stated, “The detailed judgment is awaited. We are in close touch with the legal team as well as the family members to decide on the next steps. Our Ambassador to Qatar and other officials were present in the Court of Appeal today, along with the family members. We have stood by them since the beginning of the matter and will continue to extend all consular and legal assistance. We will also continue to take up the matter with the Qatari authorities.”

The situation underscores the complexities and sensitivities involved in cases where Indian nationals face legal challenges abroad. The diplomatic efforts and consular support provided by India demonstrate the commitment to safeguarding the rights and well-being of its citizens. As the legal proceedings unfold, the focus remains on ensuring a fair and just resolution for the individuals involved in the Dahra Global Case.
