The resignation of Arun Goel from his position as the Election Commissioner of India has sparked significant concern and speculation regarding the functioning and integrity of the Election Commission, particularly with the upcoming Lok Sabha elections on the horizon. With the meeting to select his replacement scheduled for March 15, the process of appointing a new Election Commissioner is underway, with Prime Minister Narendra Modi set to preside over the meeting along with the leader of the largest opposition party, Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury.

Arun Goel’s resignation comes at a critical juncture, just days ahead of the highly anticipated Lok Sabha elections, which are expected to witness the participation of millions of voters across the country. While the exact reason for his resignation remains undisclosed, the Ministry of Law and Justice announced that Indian President Droupadi Murmu had accepted his resignation without providing further details. However, sources have indicated that Goel cited “personal reasons” for his departure, according to reports from NDTV.

The sudden resignation of Arun Goel has raised eyebrows and triggered concerns among opposition leaders, who view it as a potential setback for the electoral process and democratic principles in India. Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge described it as a “matter of concern,” questioning the timing of Goel’s departure, especially with the Lok Sabha elections looming ahead. Similarly, K.C. Venugopal, the general secretary of the Congress party, expressed deep concern over the lack of transparency surrounding Goel’s resignation and the functioning of the Election Commission.

The timing of Goel’s resignation has added to the apprehensions surrounding the electoral process, with opposition leaders questioning the integrity and independence of the Election Commission. With only one Election Commissioner remaining in office, there are concerns about the Commission’s ability to effectively oversee the upcoming elections and ensure a fair and impartial electoral process. The absence of transparency in the circumstances leading to Goel’s resignation has further fueled suspicions about political interference and pressure on constitutional institutions.

As the meeting to select the new Election Commissioner approaches, there is heightened anticipation regarding the appointment process and the individual who will assume the critical role. The presence of both the Prime Minister and the leader of the largest opposition party in the selection meeting underscores the importance of ensuring bipartisan consensus and upholding the principles of democracy and electoral integrity. It remains to be seen how the selection process unfolds and what implications it holds for the future of the Election Commission and India’s electoral democracy.

Arun Goel’s resignation has raised significant concerns about the functioning and independence of the Election Commission, particularly in the lead-up to the Lok Sabha elections. The selection of his replacement will be closely watched, with a focus on maintaining the credibility and impartiality of the electoral process in India. As the country prepares for one of the largest democratic exercises in the world, it is imperative to uphold the principles of transparency, accountability, and fairness in the electoral process.
