Bengaluru, the capital city of Karnataka, has demonstrated a positive trend in managing traffic congestion, according to the recently released TomTom Traffic Index 2023. The city’s rank has dropped to sixth place from the second position in 2022, signifying a notable improvement in its congestion levels.
In the TomTom Traffic Index, the average travel time within Bengaluru for a 10km drive was nearly 30 minutes in 2022. However, in 2023, the travel time has seen a reduction to 28 minutes for the same distance. This improvement is reflective of efforts to optimize traffic flow and enhance the overall commuting experience in the city.
Global Ranking and Top Congested Cities
London has retained its top spot as the ‘Most Congested City’ in the world, recording an average travel time of 37 minutes and 20 seconds to cover a distance of 10 km. Despite the improvement, Bengaluru still features among the top congested cities globally, showcasing the ongoing challenges in managing urban traffic.
India’s Pune also made it to the list of the world’s top 10 congested cities, with an average travel time of 27 minutes and 50 seconds to cover a 10 km distance in 2023. Although there was a slight increase of 30 seconds from the previous year, Pune’s inclusion in the top 10 highlights the prevalent traffic issues in major Indian cities.
Traffic Conditions in Other Indian Cities
In the TomTom Traffic Index, New Delhi is ranked as the world’s 44th most congested city, with an average travel time of 21 minutes and 40 seconds required to cover a distance of 10 km. Mumbai follows closely, securing the 54th position, with an average travel time of 21 minutes and 20 seconds in 2023.
TomTom Traffic Index Methodology
The TomTom Traffic Index analyzed traffic conditions in 387 cities across 55 countries, comparing average travel times. The evaluation considered various types of vehicles, including those with different drive types such as petrol, diesel, and electric vehicles (EV). The index provides a comprehensive overview of traffic efficiency on a global scale.
