Captain GR Gopinath, the Founder of Air Deccan, expressed his views on the recent arrest of Jet Airways founder Naresh Goyal in a ₹538 crore bank fraud case. Goyal, who was sent to 14-day judicial custody, faced allegations of siphoning off funds from India to overseas through various trusts and property acquisitions. In response to this development, Gopinath emphasized the importance of timely decision-making and protecting airlines as vital contributors to employment and infrastructure.

Gopinath acknowledged Goyal’s past contributions to the aviation industry, stating, “He (Naresh Goyal) had made the country proud as an airline, but unfortunately, I think he should have sensed that the problem was coming and taken a timely decision to bring in equity before it was too late.”

However, he strongly advocated for the government’s role in preserving airlines, even in cases where the promoter is accused of financial misconduct. Gopinath explained, “I think the governments must always save the airline. If the promoter has committed fraud, you can separate it and investigate and prosecute, but you must save the airline because you save jobs, you save infrastructure.”

Gopinath’s perspective underscores the broader impact of an airline’s health on the economy, as it provides employment opportunities and supports critical infrastructure. He also emphasized the positive outcomes of preserving airlines, such as fostering healthy competition in the industry.

In the case of Naresh Goyal, the Enforcement Directorate (ED) arrested him under the Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA) following an extensive questioning session. The allegations against him and other former Jet Airways executives stem from an FIR filed by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI). The FIR accused Goyal and others of being involved in a ₹538 crore fraud case at Canara Bank, involving the misuse of credit limits and loans granted to Jet Airways.

While Goyal’s legal situation unfolds, Gopinath’s call for safeguarding airlines highlights the complex dynamics of the aviation industry. The sector plays a pivotal role in economic growth, job creation, and connectivity. Therefore, the ability to separate individual misconduct from the broader interests of employees and passengers remains a critical consideration.

Captain GR Gopinath’s insights serve as a reminder of the importance of responsible management and oversight in the aviation sector. As the industry faces challenges and uncertainties, timely decisions and protective measures can contribute to its resilience and continued contribution to national development.
