NHPC Limited, India’s premier hydropower company, has taken a significant step towards advancing green and clean energy by signing a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with Andhra Pradesh Power Generation Corporation (APGENCO) Limited. The collaboration is focused on the implementation of pumped hydro storage projects (PSPs) and renewable energy (RE) projects in Andhra Pradesh.

The MoU outlines the initial phase of the partnership, which involves the execution of two identified pumped hydro storage projects with a combined capacity of 1,950 MW. These projects, named Kamlapadu (950 MW) and Yaganti (1,000 MW), are poised to contribute significantly to the state’s energy landscape and clean energy development. The implementation of these projects will not only promote the use of clean and sustainable energy but also create employment opportunities and stimulate local economies. The projects will be developed as joint ventures between NHPC and APGENCO.

The MoU signing ceremony took place in Tadepalli, Guntur, Andhra Pradesh, with the presence of Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister Y.S. Jagan Mohan Reddy. The agreement was formalized by NHPC’s Director (Finance), R.P. Goyal, and APGENCO’s Managing Director, K.V.N. Chakradhar Babu, along with other officials from both organizations.

The collaboration’s primary objective is to harness the potential of pumped hydro storage projects as energy storage solutions. These projects align with India’s national energy objectives, aiming to achieve 500 GW of installed electricity capacity from non-fossil fuel sources (renewable energy + nuclear) by 2030 and to realize a net-zero emissions target by 2070, as stated by the Ministry of Power.

Pumped storage systems play a crucial role in storing surplus grid power during periods of lower demand and then releasing it during peak demand, effectively stabilizing the power grid. By utilizing the surplus energy from sources like thermal power stations, pumped storage projects contribute to a reliable and efficient energy supply.

NHPC Limited boasts a total installed capacity of 7,097.2 MW of renewable power, including wind and solar energy, through its 25 power stations, which includes 1,520 MW generated through its subsidiaries. The collaboration with APGENCO adds another dimension to NHPC’s efforts to drive the adoption of clean and sustainable energy solutions, thereby contributing to India’s energy transition and environmental sustainability goals.
