The worship of the Sun God has ancient roots and is mentioned in scriptures such as the Vedas. According to folklore, sage Kashyapa and his wife Aditi were blessed with the incarnation of Lord Surya, who was one of the Adityas. Another legend narrates the story of King Yashovarma, who prayed to Lord Surya for a son. Upon performing Ratha Saptami pooja as advised by a saint, the king’s son recovered from illness, and he went on to rule the kingdom.

Ratha Saptami holds significant cultural and spiritual significance. It is believed that on this day, Lord Surya begins his journey towards the northern hemisphere, riding a chariot drawn by seven horses. Hence, the festival is also known as Surya Jayanti, celebrating the birth of Lord Surya.

The festival marks the beginning of the spring season and the harvest season. Farmers across the country visit sun temples to seek blessings for a bountiful harvest and favorable weather conditions throughout the year.

Devotees wake up early in the morning on Ratha Saptami to offer arghya (offerings) to the rising sun and observe a day-long fast. It is believed that worshiping the Sun God on this day brings good luck and absolves one of their sins. Additionally, it is customary to donate clothes and food to the poor, pray for longevity, prosperity, and good health.

Ratha Saptami is a significant Hindu festival that honors the Sun God and marks the beginning of spring and the harvest season. It is a time for devotees to express gratitude, seek blessings, and engage in acts of charity and piety.
