India and New Zealand are discussing the introduction of the Unified Payments Interface (UPI) in the island nation, which would promote ease of doing business, trade and tourism between both countries. UPI is a real-time payment system developed by the National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI). It allows users to make instant payments to merchants, friends, and family without the need for a debit card or credit card.

The introduction of UPI in New Zealand would make it easier for Indian tourists and businesses to make payments in the country. It would also help to boost trade between the two countries. For Indian tourists, UPI would be a convenient way to pay for goods and services in New Zealand. They would no longer need to carry cash or credit cards, which can be inconvenient and expensive to use overseas. UPI would also be a more secure way to make payments, as it does not require the sharing of sensitive financial information.

For Indian businesses, UPI would make it easier to accept payments from New Zealand customers. This would help to increase their sales and expand their market reach. UPI would also be a more cost-effective way to accept payments, as it does not involve any transaction fees.

The Indian commerce ministry said that the two countries have welcomed early discussions between the NPCI and Payments NZ regarding the UPI system. They have agreed that both sides should continue deliberations on this issue.

The NPCI has already signed agreements with payment systems in other countries, such as the UAE, Bhutan, and Nepal. It is also in talks to extend UPI services in the US, European countries, and West Asia.

The introduction of UPI in New Zealand would be a major boost to trade and tourism between the two countries. It would also make it easier for Indian businesses to operate in the island nation.

In addition to the benefits mentioned above, the introduction of UPI in New Zealand could also help to:

  • Reduce the cost of remittances for Indian migrants living in New Zealand.
  • Improve financial inclusion in New Zealand by making it easier for people without bank accounts to make payments.
  • Promote innovation in the financial sector by providing a platform for new payment solutions.

Overall, the introduction of UPI in New Zealand would be a positive development for both countries. It would make it easier for people to do business and travel between India and New Zealand, and it would help to boost economic growth in both countries.
