In a significant turn of events, businessman Sujit Patkar, currently in judicial custody for his alleged involvement in irregularities pertaining to COVID-19 treatment centers in Mumbai, has moved an application before a special court seeking to retract his statements. Patkar’s application alleges that his statements were obtained under duress, force, coercion, and undue influence by the Enforcement Directorate (ED).

According to his lawyer, Subash Jha, Patkar’s statements were recorded by the ED during the course of its investigation on July 21, 23, 24, 25, and 26. The application submitted by Patkar asserts that the statements, which were intended to implicate him and other accused parties, were recorded under questionable circumstances and should not be considered as evidence in any proceeding.

Sujit Patkar, reportedly a close aide of Shiv Sena (UBT) Rajya Sabha MP Sanjay Raut, finds himself in judicial custody since his arrest on July 19 in connection with the case. His application contends that his arrest and subsequent treatment are actuated by malafide intentions and are politically motivated. It alleges that he has been singled out due to his perceived proximity to certain politicians.

The case centers around Lifeline Hospital Management Services, a partnership firm established in June 2020, of which Patkar and three others were partners. The firm reportedly received ₹31.84 crore from the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation for supplying medical personnel to COVID-19 centers. However, the Enforcement Directorate alleges that the firm lacked the requisite experience in providing medical personnel or services.

The agency further claims that Patkar received a substantial amount of the proceeds of the alleged crime from Lifeline Management Services, deposited in his personal bank account.

This development adds a new layer of complexity to the ongoing investigation and legal proceedings. Patkar’s application seeking to retract his statements and alleging coercion underscores the importance of due process and fair treatment in legal cases. As the matter unfolds, it will be closely watched for its potential impact on the larger discourse surrounding the alleged irregularities in COVID-19 treatment centers in Mumbai.
