The advent of the artificial intelligence revolution in the job market has raised concerns about potential job losses, and a recent incident in Kolkata highlights the impact on creative professionals. Sharanya Bhattacharya, a 22-year-old copywriter and postgraduate biological science student, has become the latest victim of AI disruption in the industry.

Once a ghostwriter and copywriter for a creative solutions agency, Sharanya used to earn around $240 a month by working on a few SEO-optimized articles each week. However, her life took a drastic turn when her firm introduced ChatGPT, an AI-powered writing tool, to generate content. Soon after, her workload decreased significantly, and she found herself earning only 10% of her previous income. She suspects that the firm adopted ChatGPT to cut costs, leaving her and her family in financial distress.

Sharanya’s reduced income has had a profound impact on her and her mother’s lives. They have been forced to cut back heavily on living expenses, limiting their food consumption and giving up on activities they used to enjoy, like dining out. The financial strain has taken a toll on her emotional well-being, causing anxiety, panic attacks, and feelings of being lost.

She emphasizes the crucial difference between human-produced work and AI-generated content, urging companies to consider the human cost of mass job cuts. Sharanya is not alone in her struggle; many copywriters around the world are facing similar challenges due to the increasing use of AI technologies in content creation.

Despite the difficulties she faces, Sharanya remains hopeful for the future. She believes that a collaborative approach between humans and AI can yield better results. She envisions a world where humans can incorporate AI with their copyrighting skills to work together, enhancing creativity and efficiency.

The story of Sharanya Bhattacharya highlights the need for a balanced approach to AI implementation in the creative industry. While AI technologies can bring significant benefits, it is essential to consider their impact on the workforce and find ways to integrate human expertise with AI capabilities. By creating synergies between human creativity and AI-powered tools, we can pave the way for a more inclusive and productive future in the creative landscape.
