On Friday, External Affairs Minister (EAM) S Jaishankar took part in the Champions Meeting of the Global Crisis Response Group, an event chaired by UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres. The meeting was held virtually and provided an opportunity for India to showcase its contributions as the G20 presidency. EAM Jaishankar highlighted two significant initiatives undertaken during India’s G20 presidency: the adoption of the G20 Action Plan for Accelerating Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and the country’s commitment to implementing the Common Framework for Debt Service Suspension Initiative (DSSI) in a predictable and coordinated manner. India also emphasized its efforts in promoting equitable, affordable, and inclusive energy transition pathways during the meeting.

India’s inclusion in the Champions Group of the Global Crisis Response Group is a testament to its growing global leadership and dedication to addressing pressing challenges facing the world. The GCRG was established by UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres in March 2022 with the primary goal of addressing urgent global issues related to food security, energy, and finance. By coordinating a global response, the GCRG aims to find effective solutions to these interconnected crises.

The Champions Group comprises leaders from Bangladesh, Barbados, Denmark, Germany, Indonesia, and Senegal, and it plays a crucial role in overseeing the operations and initiatives of the GCRG. India’s presence in this group further enhances the UN’s efforts to find pragmatic and result-oriented solutions to developmental issues that particularly impact developing countries.

The invitation extended by UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres to India to join the Champions Group is a recognition of the country’s commitment to global cooperation and its willingness to play an active role in addressing contemporary challenges. By actively participating in the GCRG, India aims to contribute its expertise and experience to address the complex issues that demand urgent attention and collective action.

The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) officially announced India’s decision to join the Champions Group, emphasizing the nation’s commitment to addressing contemporary global challenges. This step aligns with India’s vision of fostering multilateralism and ensuring that developing countries’ voices are heard on the global stage.

As a designated Sherpa to the GCRG process, MEA Secretary (West) Sanjay Verma will play a critical role in representing India’s interests and actively shaping the group’s outcomes. This appointment further underscores India’s determination to actively engage in finding solutions to the pressing issues facing the world.

India’s participation in the Champions Meeting and its membership in the GCRG represent a unique opportunity for the country to collaborate with other nations and international organizations to address critical global challenges effectively. By leveraging its expertise and resources, India can contribute to the development of innovative and sustainable solutions that benefit not only its citizens but also people worldwide. As the GCRG continues its efforts to coordinate a global response to crises, India’s active involvement will be instrumental in building a more resilient and equitable world for all.
